The Data Engineer will assist with the department's data integration work, including helping maintain a data warehouse and analytics environment, and writing scripts for data integration and analysis. This role will be specifically responsible for building and maintaining data pipelines to support the federation's dashboard reporting needs for the 2022 political program and other organizational priorities. It will also work closely and collaboratively with the Lead Data Engineer and members of the Analytics team to integrate data from a variety of sources, and deploy high-quality data pipelines in support of the analytics needs of the AFL-CIO and its affiliates.

The Data, Analytics & Infrastructure Resource Department's goal is to generate lasting power for the labor movement, by building the Federation's programmatic tools, web development, data systems, and analytics capacity. This team serves a broad range of clients across the labor movement--from other AFL-CIO departments to AFL-CIO affiliates, and state and local labor bodies. Through investment in central infrastructure, training, and direct service work, the department aims to empower its partners to run stronger and more cost-effective political and legislative mobilization, digital, and organizing campaigns.

Remote/Washington, DC (HQ)

This is a temporary position not to exceed November 20, 2022.

Our working engineering stack is:
● Version control: git/GitHub
● Infrastructure: Linux server and AWS
● Workflow orchestrator: prefect
● Extract and Load: python and Airbyte
● Transform: SQL and dbt
● Data quality: great expectations

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
● Design, implement, test, deploy, and maintain stable, secure, and scalable data engineering solutions and pipelines in support of data and analytics projects, including integrating new sources of data into our central data warehouse, and moving data out to applications and affiliates.
● Using tools such as Tableau, develop and maintain real-time reporting pipelines on program and progress metrics, including but not limited to voter contact and other program-generated data.
● Produce scalable, replicable code and engineering solutions that help automate repetitive data management tasks.
● Work with other analytics team members to fulfill affiliate and partner needs, and troubleshoot technical issues as needed.
● Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
● Extract and Load: Demonstrated experience with Python to build and automate data pipelines
● Transform: Experience with relational databases and/or analytical data warehouses and SQL to manipulate and transform datasets
● BA or BS in related field or equivalent work experience.
● Demonstrated ability to write clear, tested code that is well-documented and version-controlled.
● Strong attention to detail.
● Experience working with cloud infrastructure services like Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud is preferred but not required.
● Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
● Experience with VoteBuilder, the LAN or VAN and digital organizing tools, like Action Network, ActionKit or Blue State Digital, is a plus but not required.
● Experience with Tableau or advanced data visualization and mapping are helpful, but not required.
● Knowledge of and experience with the labor movement a plus.
● Ability to work long and extended hours as needed.

Starting annual salary: $86,284
