The Internal Organizing Coordinator position helps drive the AFL-CIO mission to strengthen local labor movements in order to build power in workplaces and communities and to combat attacks on working people. Specifically, this position will lead the AFL-CIO strategy to help affiliate unions strengthen locals by supporting their work to increase the interaction, education and mobilization of members.

The Internal Organizing Coordinator is a staff leadership role working closely with multiple departments at the AFL-CIO to coordinate the core strategic areas of AFL-CIO strategy:
1. reinforcing best practices for building and maintaining strong local unions;
2. utilizing existing AFL-CIO state and local networks and field mobilization operations to support the efforts of national and local unions to build power through engaging and mobilizing their members;
3. committing resources and expertise from data, communications, and state and local legislative efforts; and
4. providing other resources and membership services that the AFL-CIO is uniquely in the position to provide.

The Internal Organizing Coordinator is assigned to the Economic, Power and Growth Hub, reports to the Hub Director and Deputy Director to keep them informed on a regular basis on issues affecting the departmental and AFL-CIO programs. The coordinator ensures that the mission and strategy supports affiliate union organizing programs, and is grounded in organizing and local union building fundamentals. This position will use the expertise and resources of the Economic, Power and Growth Hub to support the larger coordination role with the Federation. The coordination role will be used to support the Hub mission which is to increase union membership, build affiliate organizing capacity, and train and equip a new generation of union activists. This position will serve as a member of the Hub's leadership team.


● Serves as point for Federation and affiliate activity around supporting the development of strong local unions and activist membership.
● Coordinates with national affiliate organizing programs about program and practices to build internal organizing capacity.
● Brings organizing experience and knowledge of national affiliate programs to inform strategy for SF/CLC role to support local union affiliates.
● Partners with Mobilization Hub leadership to build capacity among field staff to provide direction and support for SF/CLC work to support local union building efforts.
● Leads work of peer multi-disciplinary group to shape a unified AFL-CIO strategy to support local unions, and build power through engaging and mobilizing their members.
● Works with peer team to develop work processes, communications, protocols, planning and reporting mechanisms.
● Works to ensure program is aligned with AFL-CIO role, strategy and best practices for local union building.
● Articulates and explains AFL-CIO strategy in this area to affiliates, SF/CLCs, and others.
● Contributes to individual program areas as needed to offer organizing expertise and perspective and/or bring key affiliates or others to the table to do so.
● Incorporates Organizing Institute leadership to develop capacity for supporting training program and materials.
● Works with Hub leadership to secure support for individual program areas that may need cross hub or resource support.
● Develops plans, tracks and assesses progress.
● Other duties as assigned.


● At least 10 years experience as a union organizer with experience in public and private sector organizing and contract campaigns, including 5-7 years in a program or campaign leadership role.
● Experience in mechanics, best practices, and dynamics of internal organizing and local union building.
● Proven success in building large scale membership engagement and internal organizing programs.
● Superior interpersonal and leadership skills.
● Understands the role of legal, legislative and political strategies in organizing campaigns. Is familiar with the use of data and communications tools in organizing and issue campaigns.
● Demonstrated success building local union leadership, membership networks, and activist local unions.
● Demonstrated success working with affiliated organizations and their staff on joint projects.
● Experience coordinating staff teams with diverse roles and interests, and organizing resources and work across departments or job functions.
● Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
● Capable of working independently as well as part of a team in both a lead and a mentor role.
● Demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse range of co-workers, leaders and organizations.
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive environments.
● Ability to work and long and extended hours.
