The Senior Digital Media Specialist is responsible for the voice of the AFL-CIO across all online platforms. This position manages all social media platforms; creates and manages social media activism events; assists senior leaders with their personal Twitter accounts; generates toolkits for campaigns; and tasks the graphic design team with graphics. The Senior Digital Media Specialist is a key participant in strategizing to increase website, blog and social media traffic, and is responsible for monitoring and ensuring that website and social media content is up to date.

The weekly reach of online platforms is often millions of people, through high interactions with influencers and allies. This position requires expert knowledge of trends and media impacting working people. The ability to advise on paid reach strategies and implement low dollar paid reach campaigns is essential.


▪ Managing all content and engagement on AFL-CIO's social media outlets, i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and other outlets as needed and as they emerge.
▪ Leading strategies and implementing concepts to boost online traffic, and collecting and analyzing online and social media traffic data for metric reporting and recommendations.
▪ Generating campaigning toolkits for affiliates and State Feds for engaging in national persuasion campaigns (elections, immigration reform, health care, etc).
▪ Being a resource for department staff, officers, affiliate staff and allied organizations on online traffic and successful social media approaches.
▪ Conducting social media trainings and providing presentations for staff of affiliates, state federations, CLCs and other labor organizations.
▪ Managing small dollar paid reach campaigns on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter as well as impression ad campaigns on the Google Display Network or other outlets.
▪ Working closely with programmatic and Digital Strategies staff and outside vendors to move high dollar paid reach strategies for legislative campaigns.
▪ Project-managing other online projects, as assigned.
▪ Staying up to date on evolving best practices and ensuring key performance indicators are met in a changing environment.
▪ Other duties as assigned.


▪ Bachelor's degree preferred in communications or media or equivalent work experience.
▪ At least three years of demonstrated experience in paid and organic online communications for a brand with a large social media following.
▪ Demonstrated experience in project-managing online content and maintaining social media sites.
▪ Exceptional judgment and discretion to participate appropriately with minimal direction on hundreds of tweets and other social media posts a week.
▪ Expert knowledge of the Facebook ads platform and all aspects of Google AdWords.
▪ Strong metrics analytical skills.
▪ Extreme attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure.
▪ Strong knowledge of the principles of graphic design and the ability to quickly make online graphics. Basic video editing skills a plus.
▪ Demonstrated ability as a key participant in conceptualizing/strategizing online and social media projects, traffic-building and working independently to move online projects to launch.
▪ Ability to work well as part of a fast-paced team with editorial, graphic, communications, programmatic and administrative colleagues as well as with affiliated unions and allied organizations.
▪ Ability to handle heavy workload, juggle competing priorities and meet deadlines.
▪ Strong interest or background in the labor movement and progressive social change.
▪ Experience working with a CMS, CSS, and HTML with basic knowledge of Google Webmasters and Analytics preferred.
▪ Ability to regularly work extended hours.
