State Communications Coordinator

The AFL-CIO State Communications Coordinator work within a targeted state to execute external and internal communications plans as a part of political and issues campaigns and lead communications work among the labor movement in that state. The communications program has a multi-part purpose:
(1) to advance the goals of political and issues field campaigns through internal and external communications;
(2) to help the AFL-CIO shape the public's opinion of today's unions and make workers' voices heard through on-the-ground activities
(3) to develop people with the skills needed to fill the labor movement's growing need for effective communicators and activists.
The State Communications Coordinators work under the direction of the Communications Director.
• Develop communications campaign strategies for both internal and external audiences in collaboration with State Federation and Central Labor Council leaders and staff;
• Craft messages for state political and issues campaigns;
• Assist in developing and executing communications trainings for union leaders, staff, and members;
• Monitor press coverage of labor and workers' issues throughout the region and identify opportunities to cultivate earned media opportunities and garner media coverage for AFL-CIO political and issues campaigns;
• Implement rapid response communications plan for the state;
• Work with union communications staff throughout the state to assist with strategic campaign communications planning and conducting external and internal communications;
• Pitch reporters on workers' issues and AFL-CIO initiatives;
• Stage press conferences and events;
• Develop, write, edit and distribute internal and external campaign communications materials, such as sample letters to editors, OpEds and other materials as necessary and working with member activists to place LTEs, etc.;
• Utilize broad communications platforms: blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Salsa, and other online, social media, broadcast and print communications;
• Produce regular reports on activity and background materials for internal and external use.
 Serve as the primary/initial communications contact for State Federations and Central Labor Councils in the assigned state.
 Work with communications staff, field staff, headquarters staff and state union leaders to integrate internal and external communications into political and issues ground campaign plans.
 Work through the Communications Director to integrate field communications with the earned media and message plans and strategies being driven by Communications Department staff on a daily basis.
• BA or BS in relevant field is required;
• At least three years of relevant work experience and demonstrated success in relevant areas especially political or issue campaigns;
• Knowledge of the labor movement and commitment to labor issues;
• Experience working in fast-paced environments and in field-based jobs;
• Experience conducting media relations;
• Excellent computer skills including Internet-based research, Demonstrated experience with online and social media tools;
• Excellent writing skills;
• Well-organized, thorough and attentive to details;
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and work under tight deadlines;
• Ability to work independently within the context of a plan;
• Previous experience with unions, student labor coalitions, community organizations and other labor related organizations is preferred;
• Ability to work long and extended hours including weekends;
• Ability to travel occasionally.
