Senior Political Strategist Lead

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Political Department provides union members with opportunities to make their voices heard in the political arena, informs members about candidates' positions on important working family issues and conducts nonpartisan voter registration and get-out-the-vote activities.

The Senior Political Strategist plays a central role in building the analytic infrastructure of the AFL-CIO to support strategic planning and campaign management. The Senior Political Strategist is responsible for developing, designing, proposing, and implementing tools and tactics to optimize organizational goals.

The Senior Political Strategist is the team lead for the Political Department's analytics division. The analytics team at the AFL-CIO provides a wide range of analysis and strategic intelligence to the AFL-CIO and its partners. This work is used to guide the Federation's resource allocation decisions, with the aim of improving the lives of working people.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Develop strategic assessments of presidential, senate, gubernatorial, congressional, state legislative, and municipal races;
• Guide the Federation's targeting, polling, modeling, experiments, analysis, and other data research;
• Employ aforementioned techniques to guide organizational priorities toward campaigns and tactics that are likely to make gains for working people;
• Collaborate with Political Department management team in the administration of the Catalist contract;
• Act as Political Department liaison to affiliates, state and local federations, and other AFL-CIO departments as it relates to use of analytic products;
• Collaborate with staff in other departments in the development of integrated, data-driven campaign operations;
• Work with member communications staff and state campaign managers on messaging and targeting of contacts;
• Work with analytics team staff to develop work plans and troubleshoot complex projects;
• Communicate team's analysis and strategic assessments to non-technical stakeholders;
• Collaborate on political voter programs and tools with outside organizations;
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Demonstrated and extensive work on political analytics using large datasets;
• Demonstrated experience/working knowledge of statistics;
• Mastery of at least one of the following disciplines: design and analysis of field experiments, survey methodology, or machine learning;
• Demonstrated excellent written and verbal skills;
• 3-5 years' experience working directly with campaign staff or high level stakeholders on statewide or national political campaigns;
• Minimum of 2 years of experience working with, or for, a union, an association, or a nonprofit political/social organization;
• Must have excellent computer skills and understanding of political technology;
• Ability to work independently as well as lead and work in a team environment;
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments;
• Working knowledge of all levels of the labor movement preferred;
• Must be a self-starter;
• Ability to work well under tight deadlines;
• Ability to work long and irregular hours, including weekends; and to travel as needed.
