Senior Organizer Trainer - Organizing Institute

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Organizing Institute assists unions build organizing capacity by recruiting, training and placing new campaign organizers, and by developing staff and volunteer member organizers to assume lead roles. The OI program achieves these goals through classroom training, and field mentoring and training.

The Senior Organizer Trainer will develop, implement and coordinate the AFL-CIO Organizing Institute's national organizer training and development program. The Senior Trainer will manage the on-site coordination for affiliate specific trainings and affiliate field training.

The Senior Organizer Trainer works under the supervision of the Director of the Organizing Institute. The Senior Organizer Trainer is not involved in supervisory or personnel decisions.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

• Work with affiliate staff to develop and implement organizer, lead organizer and volunteer member organizer training programs to build internal organizing capacity.
• Identify and coordinate affiliate campaign sites to incorporate training components.
• Assess and evaluate the current state of the affiliate organizing program and make strategic recommendations for building capacity.
• Participate in affiliate organizing campaigns in order to provide training and development of current and potential affiliate staff.
• Mentor and train all levels of organizing staff, including new recruits, volunteer members, staff organizers and campaign leads.
• Develop, revise and conduct both 2Day and 3Day trainings, including participating in the development of curriculum, for affiliate specific classroom trainings.
• Evaluate organizers for all Organizing Institute training programs.
• Work with the global labor movement to develop training modules for global organizers.
• Represent the interests of the AFL-CIO, the Organizing Department, and the Organizing Institute with all allied organizations.
• Represent and recruit for the OI in all external forums as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Reporting

• Keep the Director of the OI and the department Director fully informed on a regular basis on issues affecting departmental and AFL-CIO programs.
• Prepare and submits regular and ad hoc reports regarding affiliate training assistance and development as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

 Experience in the labor movement, including a minimum of five years union organizing experience. Both public and private sector experience preferred.
 Three years experience serving in a lead capacity on various organizing campaigns. Both public and private sector experience preferred.
 Demonstrated ability to articulate and critically assess skills and characteristics required in a union organizer and a lead organizer.
 Demonstrated experience developing and mentoring organizing staff at all levels.
 Demonstrated experience establishing programs to select and evaluate union organizers.
 Experience creating and developing curriculum for specialized educational and developmental training programs and experience conducting training sessions.
 Experience developing and implementing organizing campaign plans.
 Experience working with union leaders, staff and members on union organizing campaigns.
 Knowledge of all levels of the labor movement.
 Demonstrated ability to effectively relate to and work with diverse groups of people in various settings.
 Excellent listening, interpersonal and communication skills.
 Strong public speaking skills.
 Good writing skills.
 Demonstrated ability to build teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and a support role.
 Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
 Ability to travel on a regular basis as needed, and for extended periods of time.
 Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals.
 Computer proficiency is required for email, Internet and word processing skills. Basic computer skills and ability to learn database and spreadsheet applications.
 Proficiency in Spanish preferred.
 Limited international travel assignments will remain the same as voluntary assignments.
 Ability to work long and extended hours when needed.
