Senior Fellow

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Senior Fellow is responsible for assisting in the programmatic development and implementation of Secretary-Treasurer's priorities on working families, gender equality, including LGBT rights, and young worker activism. This includes assisting with the coordination of interdepartmental initiatives and integrating these priorities into campaigns and programs throughout the AFL-CIO Departments. In addition, s/he will serve as an informational liaison between AFL-CIO constituency groups, affiliate programs and community partners pertaining to the working families and women's issues.

This position collaborates extensively with Legislative Affairs and Campaigns Departments under the direction of the Civil, Human and Women's Rights Department and working in close coordination with the Office of the Secretary-Treasurer.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Assist in the development of the AFL-CIO's Working Families/Gender Equality Agenda, including substantive policy and program; coordination of related advocacy efforts, affiliate outreach and coalition work; and training and education, including Common Sense Economics on Working Families;
• Provide the Communications and Digital Strategies Departments with information to promote working family issues, and seek opportunities for AFL-CIO leaders to speak publically about related areas;
• Serve as an informational liaison between the AFL-CIO affiliates, community partners and constituency groups, and identify opportunities to integrate programming with AFL-CIO. This includes day-to-day communication, attending conferences, workshops, and meetings, and identifying public speaking opportunities for AFL-CIO officers and staff;
• Collaborate with the AFL-CIO Young Worker Program and assist in the creation of dynamic programming on women's equality and youth outreach. This includes assisting in the planning of the bi-annual Next Up Summit, Young Worker Advisory Council, young worker leadership development trainings and strategic planning for the young worker groups;
• Support the integration of related areas into the campaigns, initiatives and programmatic work of the AFL-CIO;
• Draft written reports, materials, factsheets, policy papers and conduct research on relevant issues;
• Provide support to the work of the Executive Council Committee on Women and similar work groups related to the AFL-CIO;
• Participate in interdepartmental working groups;
• Facilitate meetings, conference calls, workshops, and coordinate with departments on issues that involve working family issues and related areas;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience in the labor movement with a union or community organization with a minimum of one year of union/federation, community, civil rights or political organizing experience;
• Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent experience with specific demonstrated experience in human resources, recruitment, inclusion and/or civil, human and women's rights issues; Graduate degree in relevant discipline preferred.
• At least 1-2 years of relevant work experience and demonstrated success in relevant areas;
• Experience working with diverse communities;
• Excellent communication and writing skills, including ability to write policy documents and reports, successful ability to speak to large and diverse groups of professionals, youth, leaders and peers;
• Demonstrated experience and highly proficient in use of online tools, databases, computer mobilization tools and new media in a professional context. (e.g., social networks, texting, Twitter, other digital platforms);
• Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks;
• Commitment to the principles and goals of unionism and social justice;
• Knowledge and experience with both national and local structures of labor movement;
• Demonstrated ability to work independently within the context of a plan as part of a larger team;
• Effective organizational and time management skills and able to handle multiple high priority projects;
• Ability to create written work plans;
• Ability to travel as required;
• Ability to work long hours or weekends as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Duration:
• Temporary appointment not to exceed two (2) years.
