Senior Analytics Coordinator

The Political Department provides union members with opportunities to make their voices heard in the political arena, informs members about candidates' positions on important working family issues, and conducts nonpartisan voter registration and get-out-the-vote activities.

The Senior Analytics Coordinator analyzes campaign and polling data, and works in design, implementation and analysis of experimental results as well as disseminating political intelligence to AFL-CIO staff, affiliates and partners. The Coordinator is responsible for tracking day to day progress by the team of major projects and initiatives around electoral campaigns, analytics research development and campaign strategy.

The Senior Analytics Coordinator works under the lead of the Senior Political Strategist.


• Coordinate prioritization of work between analysts, team leads and the political department managers.
• Under the direction of the Department Director, or designee, act as Political Department contact to affiliates, state and local federations, and other AFL-CIO departments as it relates to use of analytic products.
• Coordinate work between AFL-CIO data consultants/vendors, including development needs, and intra-department processes.
• Oversee development of campaign strategy, working to integrate data-driven best practices into campaign planning and tactics.
• Prepare and present campaign planning and research to staff, affiliates and partners.
• Collaborate on political voter programs and tools with outside organizations.
• Train and support analysts in best practices of political targeting and strategy.
• Assist in individual analyst development through training and other opportunities for professional growth.
• Evaluate, critique, and refine data research products.
• Coordinate with the data division on data acquisition, including the acquisition of voter files, membership file maintenance and analysis of membership data.
• Present quantitative information clearly and concisely.
• Perform other duties as assigned.


• Demonstrated analytical creativity, problem-solving abilities, and experience with communication via data analysis and visualization;
• Familiarity with principles of political targeting, politics and/or political campaigning;
• At least once cycle experience implementing the principles of political targeting and optimizing campaign expenditure;
• Demonstrated interest in progressive causes – including experience with political campaign(s), labor, government or public interest groups;
• At least once cycle of experience coordinating analytic work with a team of analysts, data scientists or other highly technical fields;
• Fluency in political data, such as voter files, polling datasets, Census data, and election results;
• Robust familiarity with experimental design and statistical techniques for testing significance and interaction of data and results;
• Familiarity with several of the following programs:
     o Database interface and/or programming (SQL, Oracle, etc.)
     o Statistics (Stata, SPSS, R, etc.)
     o Mapping (ArcGIS or other)
     o Other programming or scripting (Bash, Linux/Unix, Python, etc.)
• Demonstrated excellent research and writing skills;
• Incredibly strong attention to detail;
• Experience with Catalist & VAN data and structures and contracts preferred;
• High proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint;
• Must be a self-starter;
• Ability to work long and extended hours and under tight deadlines.
