Senior Administrator

The Administrator assists the Deputy Director in the development, implementation and management of the Campaigns Department operational, budgetary and personnel related systems. The Administrator also serves as the primary liaison with the Human Resources, Accounting, Information Technology and Meetings and Travel Departments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop, manage, coordinate and assess departmental systems and operations, including meetings, travel and other areas as assigned;
• Under direction of the Deputy Director, assist with project and campaign staffing, finances, resource allocation and logistics;
• Assist in the preparation and oversight of departmental budgets, including the development of annual department budget and campaign or project specific budgets;
• Coordinate and evaluate departmental budgets and expenditures in areas including but not limited to operations, staff expenses, travel, meetings, field and project offices, campaigns, projects and direct subsidies;
• Develop, coordinate and assess departmental policies, systems and operations in the human resource area, including but not limited to staff recruitment, hiring, development, and retention; job descriptions, classifications, salaries and benefits; personal leave and communication.
• Develop and manage electoral compliance, in coordination with the Political and Accounting Departments.
• Coordinate planning of the staff of national AFL-CIO officers in close cooperation with the Political, Meetings and Travel Departments.
• Supervise and manage the Department's OPEIU staff.
• Other duties as assigned.


• BA or BS required;
• 5 to 7 years of managing administrative programs or administering programs;
• Demonstrated ability to assist in recruiting, hiring, directing of staff;
• Demonstrated ability to supervise staff;
• Demonstrated ability to assist in the planning and management of field campaigns;
• Verbal, written and analytical skills;
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects;
• Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in high pressure environments and work well as a team player;
• Creative, flexible and highly motivated;
• Fluency with Microsoft office, Outlook, Excel and database management systems;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and demonstrated expertise with Advanced Excel, including the demonstrated ability to construct and manage complex spreadsheets;
• Demonstrated experience in a program environment preferred;
• Demonstrated ability in a lead role, with budget preparation, analysis and composition;
• Demonstrated experience managing a team of staff;
• Demonstrated ability to work independently;
• Highly motivated self-starter;
• Exceptional attention to detail;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
• Demonstrated analytical skills;
• Three cycles of campaign experience preferred;
• Nonprofit or union accounting experience preferred;
• Great Plains experience a plus;
• Ability to work long and extended hours when needed.
