Safety and Health Fellow

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Strategic Campaigns Coordinator will work in coordination with the Director of Strategic Research to provide strategic and tactical assistance to affiliates in major bargaining campaigns. The Strategic Campaigns Coordinator will lead field operations in the implementation of strategic bargaining campaigns, and will assist and advise affiliate staff in developing plans for research, power structure analysis, strategy, tactics, and campaign implementation.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Technical Support
• Direct, assist and advise affiliates in critical bargaining campaigns.
• Conduct education and training for and with affiliates in strategic campaign development and implementation.
• Conduct corporate vulnerability research.
• Analyze power relationships, develop capacity for and implement labor-community mobilization strategies in the furtherance of Federation/affiliate strategic campaign initiatives.
• Lead on-site evaluations of potential or existing strategic campaigns for the purpose of determining courses of action prior to commitment of Federation resources.
• Participate in Departmental planning, budgeting and implementation of programs.
• Participate in departmental and inter-departmental work groups.
Liaison
• Represent the Department and the AFL-CIO in internal and external forums and meetings as a leading expert in strategic campaign techniques; develop and maintain relationships with other relevant AFL-CIO and affiliate staff, outside consultants, community organizations, and other issue activists to promote AFL-CIO interests;
• Must coordinate/work closely with management and staff of the Organizing and Political department, as well as other AFL-CIO departments, and affiliate staff and leadership at all levels.
Reporting
• Keeps the Director fully informed on a regular basis on issues affecting departmental programs.
• Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on departmental activities as required.
Other
• Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Five to seven years of collective bargaining campaign experience.
• Five years of experience in developing and implementing worksite mobilization efforts.
• Five years of experience in developing and implementing strike strategies.
• Five years of experience in developing community mobilization strategies.
• Demonstrated experience with corporate vulnerability research and power structure analysis.
• Experience in developing campaigns.
• Demonstrated experience managing large-scale campaigns.
• Demonstrated ability to develop plans to build mobilization capacity with CLCs.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct corporate research, including firm-specific analysis of ownership and control.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct issue research, including analysis of polling and focus research, message development, media coverage and advocacy.
• Knowledge of all levels of the labor movement.
• Excellent analytical skills.
• Strong computer skills including proficiency with Lexis-Nexis and other web based research tools.
• Demonstrated ability to build teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and a support role.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
• Ability to work independently within the context of a plan.
• Ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
• Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals.
• Ability to work long and extended hours.
• Travel required on a regular basis as needed, and for extended periods of time.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The AFL-CIO Safety and Health Department advocates and works for stronger worker safety and health protections and worker rights primarily through federal and state regulatory and legislative activities. The department plays a leadership role in the safety and health community in the development of safety and health policies and initiatives. It has a small staff, broad responsibilities and is involved in a wide range of safety and health issues and initiatives.
The purpose of the AFL-CIO Safety and Health Fellowship includes the following:
• To promote and advance the safety and health priorities and programs of the AFL-CIO;
• To support the Safety and Health Department's initiatives and programs through research, writing, editing, analysis, and providing logistical support as needed.
• To develop people with the skills and commitment to be part of a new generation of labor safety and health activists and leaders.
The fellow position is a full-time, year-long opportunity to explore and be part of the labor and safety and health movements while developing specific safety and health research, writing and advocacy skills.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Assist the Director and Safety and Health Department staff with researching and writing comments on proposed safety and health regulations and legislation;
• Conduct research and respond to requests for information on safety and health issues;
• Monitor developments on safety and health issues and create communication and advocacy materials;
• Assist with the research, writing and production of the annual report - Death on the Job: Toll of Neglect: A National and State-by-State Profile of Worker Safety and Health in the United States;
• Assist with planning and organization of the annual April 28 Workers Memorial Day activities;
• Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• The Safety and Health Fellow should be a strong writer and communicator with a deep commitment to and interest in safety and health issues and worker rights;
• Undergraduate degree in safety and health, public health or related discipline; a graduate degree in safety and health or public health (e.g. industrial hygiene, epidemiology, toxicology) is preferred.
• Previous experience with unions, safety and health coalitions, community organizations allied with labor or other labor-related organizations is a plus, but not a requirement;
• Excellent computer skills proficiency with Microsoft Office;
• Strong working knowledge, and experience with, web-based research;
• Well-organized with a strong attention to detail.
DURATION:
• Temporary, one (1) year position.
