Regional Director - Northeast Region

The Regional Director is the AFL-CIO's liaison and link to state federations, area and central labor councils and regional affiliates and is responsible for developing and maintaining these relationships in order to move federation priorities, campaigns and programs in the field. The Regional Director manages and coordinates implementation of all federation programs and initiatives in their region and supervises field and administrative staff.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

• Represent the interests of the national AFL-CIO, its officers and staff at all times with state federations, area and central labor councils, AFL-CIO affiliates and AFL-CIO constituency groups, coalition partners and other support organizations.
• Lead the national AFL-CIO's efforts with state, area and local labor councils in the implementation of mobilization plans for campaigns and programs.
• Participate in strategic discussions on tactics and implementation of campaigns with Field Director.
• Develop strategic relationships with affiliates on national, regional, state and local level.
• Build structures for sustainable mobilization efforts that strengthen state federation and central labor council participation, including restructuring and reorganization in order to build capacity of state and central labor councils.
• Assessment of ongoing work of state and local councils and recommendation of ways to improve their capacity.
• Achieve intelligence with regard to the politics of the relationships within the labor movement, political parties and the community as it affects the ongoing work of the state and local councils.
• Provide effective support and leadership to state and local labor leaders.
• Manage and direct staff.
• Troubleshoot issues as necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

• 5-7 years experience within the labor movement.
• Knowledge of and experience with both national, state and local structures of the labor movement.
• Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
• Ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to build and motivate teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and support role.
• Working knowledge of state legislative processes.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
• Ability to work independently within context of a plan.
• Demonstrated experience managing staff and diverse staff teams.
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent political judgment and discretion.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to travel on a regular basis as needed, and for extended periods of time.
• Computer proficiency is required: email, internet, database/spreadsheet, word processing, and web conferencing.
