Political Assistant

The Political Department provides union members with opportunities to make their voices heard in the political arena, informs members about candidates' positions on important working family issues and get-out-the-vote activities. The Political Assistant will work at the direction of the Assistant Director to help carry out responsibilities related to candidates, political organizations, and allied groups.
Program Implementation and Development
• Help field calls from candidates and campaign committees.
• Support department sponsored candidate events, including candidate interviews, meet & greets, and fundraisers.
• Research and prepare briefings on races and candidates, including scheduling of regular candidate trainings and race reviews.
• Support AFL-CIO communications & relationships with relevant Party Committees
• Analyze PAC spending in labor movement including AFL-CIO contributions, as well as non-labor PAC contributions.
• Assist with coordination of work with affiliates and other departments of the AFL-CIO as it relates to candidate and party organization work.
• Support regular communication with affiliates, state and local labor leaders, and allies, including writing/drafting updates/emails around key elections and campaigns.
• Help with drafting of talking points and briefings for the Department Director and AFL-CIO Officers, as needed.
• Assist in preparation of materials for Political Director and other meetings.
• Represent the AFL-CIO Political Department at outside meetings and events, as needed.
• Keeps the Director and Assistant Director fully informed on a regular basis on issues affecting department programs.
• Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on department activities as required.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree is preferred.
• 3 years experience required.
• Must have experience in the labor movement; familiarity with all levels of the labor movement desired.
• Political campaign experience, either working on a campaign and/or working in a political organization, helpful.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills including being comfortable speaking to large groups of people.
• Ability to produce written reports, talking points, and briefings on deadline.
• Demonstrated ability to use spreadsheet and database software including ACCESS to download and manipulate candidate and PAC filings and internal AFL-CIO database(s).
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
• Ability to work independently within the context of a plan.
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks.
• Demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals.
• Ability to work long and irregular hours and travel as required.
