The Organizing Department supports workers seeking to form their own unions. The department assists unions as they dedicate resources to organizing and helps unions build organizing capacity. The department collaborates with national unions on strategic organizing campaigns and employs media, community, legislative, political, regulatory, legal, bargaining and other lawful forms of pressure to support worker organizing efforts.

The organizer-in-training position allows less experienced organizers obtain direct on-site campaign training. This training will be a vehicle for upward growth and development into organizer and lead organizer positions. The organizer-in-training will primarily assist the campaign organizers and the campaign leads [comprised of both AFL-CIO and affiliate staff] with the execution of the overall organizing plan. This position is for a candidate who possesses skills necessary for field organizing, but requires more training to have a full complement of skills. This organizer-in-training position must be able to travel.

• Assists campaign organizers in developing and implementing organizing campaign plans, focusing on developing worker activists; One-on-one communication with workers.
• Acquires training in building capacity among community and religious organizations in support of campaign efforts.
• Works with volunteer organizing committee members to assist in campaigns.
• Assists campaign organizers in development and production of campaign materials, including communications materials.
• Uses digital media tools with more experienced organizers.
• Keeps the Department Director and Deputy Director informed on a regular basis of issues affecting campaigns and departmental programs.
• Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on departmental activities as required.

• Demonstrated one-on-one organizing experience.
• One year of organizing (or related) campaign experience including experience working with affiliate staff.
• Strong listening, research and communication skills.
• Familiarity with digital media tools.
• Ability to work independently within the context of a plan.
• Ability to meet deadlines in a high pressure environment.
• Ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends.
• Ability to use basic word processing, database programs and email.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
• Flexible, creative and highly motivated.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to travel on a regular basis, sometimes extensively and for long periods of time.
• Ability to temporarily relocate.
• Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.
• Ability to work long and extended hours when needed.

*Temporary fund position not to exceed three (3) years.
