Organizational and Leadership Development Coordinator

OVERVIEW OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Organizational and Leadership Development Coordinator is responsible for leading the development and delivery of leadership training and strategic planning help to officers and staff of state federations and central labor councils. The primary purpose of the leadership development and strategic planning work is to assist in the development of state federations and area and central labor councils, in order to carry out the agenda of the AFL-CIO. The Organizational and Leadership Development Coordinator leads and coordinates the development and implementation of assigned training programs for affiliates.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

• Lead the recruitment, planning design and delivery of the semi-annual AFL-CIO National Leadership Institute for State Federation and Central Labor Councils and the annual Advanced Leadership Institute
• Coordinate the work of the Organizational and Leadership Development Coordinators in tracking, mentoring and assisting the LI participants in their on-going project work between on-campus sessions of the Institute. Responsible for hands-on tracking/mentoring/assistance for a number of LI participants as well.
• Collect, update and develop as needed appropriate training materials for use with LI participants and other state-federation, ALF and CLC leaders and affiliates as required.
• Work with affiliates on developing trainings as requested and lead Campaigns Department team in implementation of said trainings.
• Assist team to develop and deliver appropriate strategic planning assistance in targeted CLC, Area and State Federations
• Assist in the development and delivery of specific leadership development assistance in designated New Alliance states, in pre-and post-Convocation work.
• Develop and coordinate the delivery of New Officer training for CLC and State Fed leaders – on national and/or regional basis.
• Lead the development and delivery of those components of CLC and State Fed Regional conferences, CLC/SF Advisory Council meetings, and other forums that are focused on organizational and leadership development.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Governance, Organizational and Leadership Development.



QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

• BA or BS in Labor Studies helpful.
• Minimum five years labor education, leadership development and training experience.
• Experience working with CLC, State Federation and affiliate leaders and staff
• Knowledge and experience with both local and national structures of the labor movement.
• Familiarity with and experience in working with the field programs of the AFL-CIO, especially leadership development, New Alliance/Union Cities restructuring, union member political education and mobilization, union organizing and community/union mobilization.
• Experience as a trainer, facilitator and mentor of staff.
• Demonstrated ability to provide effective support and leadership to CLC and State Federation leaders and staff.
• Experience in the development and delivery of training curriculum and programs in the context of labor councils, state federations and affiliates.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and support organizational change efforts including experience designing and facilitating organizational strategic planning processes.
• Demonstrated effectiveness as a classroom or field educator, including a proven ability to effectively connect with, inspire, and coach adult learners.
• Ability to work independently in the context of a plan and to coordinate work with other related demands/priorities of the organization – working with headquarters and field staff and organizations.
• Ability to work well with a diverse range of leaders and organizations.
• Effective time management skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Ability to travel frequently and perform weekend and evening work.
