National Political and Leadership Training Coordinator

Overview of responsibilities:
The National Political Leadership Development Coordinator will be a part of a team responsible for leading the development and delivery of comprehensive campaign training for electoral campaigns, state and federal legislative, organizing and collective bargaining campaigns and other campaigns and initiatives of the Campaigns department. Assists officers and staff of state federations and central labor councils with strategic planning as assigned. The primary purpose of the leadership development and strategic planning work is to assist in the development of state federations and area and central labor councils, in order to carry out the agenda of the AFL-CIO.

Description of duties
• Develop and deliver targeted training and leadership development programs, specifically on comprehensive campaign for National Staff, AFL-CIO State Federations, Central Labor bodies, affiliate unions and community partners. This will include the creation of customized modules and materials on various programs for use by leaders, members and staff of state and local central labor bodies and international unions.
• Work with affiliate unions to identify needs, best practices, and opportunities to provide assistance.
• Develop and deliver training programs on various aspects of the political program including campaign skills, managing volunteers, coordination of worksite programs, and political communication skills.
• Help develop train-the-trainer program to maximize capacity for training delivery.
• Identify, build relationships with and develop trainers who have vast legislative, electoral, political and organizing, further identifying those who have specific expertise in elements of campaigns.
• Collect, update and develop as needed appropriate training materials for use with Leadership Institute participants and other state-federation, ALF and CLC leaders as required.
• Lead team to develop and deliver appropriate strategic planning assistance in targeted CLC, Area and State Federations.
• Assist in the development and delivery of specific leadership development assistance in designated New Alliance states.
• Work with affiliate unions to identify needs, best practices, and opportunities to provide assistance.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Deputy Director of Governance, Organizational and Leadership Development (GOLD).
• Bachelor's degree in Labor Studies or Political Science helpful.
• Minimum 5-7 years of experience in developing and implementing training curriculum and programs.
• Experience working on multiple political campaigns, electoral and/or legislative
• Familiarity with and experience in working with the field programs of the AFL-CIO, union organizing and community/union mobilization.
• Proven ability to write, develop and deliver training programs related to campaign development and implementation, organizational and leadership development.
• Experience with adult education principles and popular education modalities, commitment to inclusive training programming.
• Experience as a trainer, facilitator, mentor, and team leader of staff.
• Capable of working independently as well as part of a small leadership development team.
• Experience in the development and delivery of training curriculum and programs in the context of labor councils and state federations is helpful.
• Demonstrated ability to make professional and persuasive presentations and to meaningfully engage a wide range of participants including different labor groups and community allies.
• Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
• Demonstrated effectiveness as a classroom or field educator, including a proven ability to effectively connect with, inspire, and coach adult learners.
• Ability to work well with a diverse range of leaders and organizations.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive environments.
• Ability to travel frequently in performance of the duty of the job.
• Ability to work and long and extended hours.
• A spirit of creativity and innovation in developing programs.
• Must be a team player as well as able to take own initiative.

• Keeps GOLD Team Director and Deputy Director fully informed of work progress and any issues affecting department programs on a regular basis.
• Collaborates with other GOLD Team and Campaigns Department staff on a regular basis
