National Community Services Program Coordinator

OVERVIEW OF REPONSIBILITIES:

The National Community Services Program Coordinator oversees the United Way Worldwide (UWW)-AFL-CIO relationship and policy development as per the Memorandum of Understanding, and ensures alignment among AFL-CIO affiliates, State Federations, and Area and Central Labor Councils around Community Services programs and initiatives. The Program Coordinator works directly with the Community Engagement Team, the United Way Regional Directors and with other relevant partners in developing and implementing Community Services programs and initiatives that advance the Federation's mission and goals.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

• Works with senior staff to develop and implement policies and procedures governing AFL-CIO Community Services activities carried out through the Campaigns Department;
• Develops and implements strategies to connect AFL-CIO Community Services activities to the field work of the Federation, its State Feds, CLCs and affiliates;
• Develops and implements AFL-CIO Community Services programs and initiatives with and through AFL-CIO Community Services Liaisons/United Way Worldwide;
• Coordinates AFL-CIO Community Services Liaisons jointly with UWW to implement AFL-CIO Community Services initiatives, policies and programs through state and local federations;
• Oversees the AFL-CIO Community Engagement Team work with United Way and AFL-CIO Community Services Liaisons;
• Serves as liaison for the AFL-CIO to affiliated union community services departments and programs;
• Works with the AFL-CIO Community Engagement Team to develop Community Services initiatives, programs, strategies and training materials;
• Responsible for working with United Way Worldwide, and state and local federations and Community Services Regional Directors in creating new liaison positions with state and local federations;
• Develops and implements various workshops, conferences and other trainings as necessary, with UWW and other relevant community partners;
• Develops and implements outreach and collaboration among state federations, area and central labor councils with community and religious allies and partners in direct connection with the Community Engagement Team;
• Provides technical assistance and mediates conflicts that arise on the local level among UWs and unions, Central and Area Labor Councils and State Federations;
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 5 years relevant work experience with labor including labor community partnerships, specifics in training design and delivery, organizational development and team building.
• Experience managing or leading a team of four or more people.
• Experience managing a field program which includes more than 100 people.
• Knowledge of and experience with the labor movement at the local level.
• Knowledge of the AFL-CIO/United Way Worldwide Community Services program helpful.
• Demonstrated ability to develop strategic plans in coordination with leaders.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and support organizational change efforts.
• Ability to work independently within the context of a plan.
• Ability to work well with a diverse range of leaders and organizations.
• Experience in the work of state and local central bodies and community services programs.
• Ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent listening, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to build teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and a support role.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing campaign and personal work plans and goals.
• Computer proficiency is required for email, Internet and word processing skills. Basic computer skills and ability to learn database and spreadsheet applications.
• Ability to travel on a regular basis as needed, and for extended periods of time.
• Ability to work long and extended hours as needed.
