JOB TITLE: Junior Field Communications Coordinator

Temporary- Fund Position, not to exceed December 31, 2014
The AFL-CIO Junior Field Communications Coordinator works within a targeted region to assist with external and internal communications plans as a part of political and issues campaigns and assist with communications work among the labor movement in that region. The field communications program has a multi-part purpose:
(1) to advance the goals of political and issues field campaigns through internal and external communications;
(2) to help the AFL-CIO shape the public's opinion of today's unions and make workers' voices heard through on-the-ground activities
(3) to develop people with the skills needed to fill the labor movement's growing need for effective communicators and activists.
The Junior Field Communications Coordinator works under the direction of the Communications Director, Strategic Advisor.
• Assist in developing communications strategies for both internal and external audiences in collaboration with State Federation and Central Labor Council leaders and staff;
• Assist in developing and executing communications trainings for union leaders, staff, and members;
• Monitor press coverage of labor and workers' issues throughout the region and identify opportunities to cultivate earned media opportunities and garner media coverage for AFL-CIO political and issues campaigns;
• Assist in rapid response communications planning for the region;
• Work with union communications staff throughout the region including directly with the State Federation communications staff to assist with strategic campaign communications planning and conducting external and internal communications;
• Help with pitching reporters on workers' issues and AFL-CIO initiatives;
• Assist with staging press conferences and events;
• Develop, write, edit and distribute internal and external campaign communications materials, such as sample letters to editors, OpEds and other materials as necessary and working with member activists to place LTEs, etc.;
• Utilize broad communications platforms: blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Salsa, and other online, social media, broadcast and print communications;
• Produce regular reports on activity.
 Work with the Communications Department to integrate field communications with the earned media and message plans and strategies being driven by the department staff on a daily basis.
 Work directly with the Northeast Field Communications Coordinator to assist with ongoing communications work.
• BA or BS in relevant field is required;
• At least two years of relevant work experience and demonstrated success in relevant areas especially political or issue campaigns;
• Knowledge of the labor movement; and commitment to labor issues
• Experience working in fast-pace environments and in field-based jobs;
• Experience conducting media relations;
• Excellent computer skills including Internet-based research
• Demonstrated experience with online and social media tools;
• Excellent writing skills;
• Well-organized, thorough and attentive to details;
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and work under tight deadlines;
• Previous experience with unions, student labor coalitions, community organizations and other labor related organizations is preferred;
• Ability to work long and extended hours including weekends;
• Ability to travel occasionally.
