Junior Analyst

The Political Department of the AFL-CIO provides union members with opportunities to make their voices heard in the political arena, informs members about candidates' positions on important working family issues, and conducts nonpartisan voter registration and get-out-the-vote activities.

The analytics team of the political department provides a wide range of analysis and strategic intelligence to the AFL-CIO, our affiliates, and partners. This work is used to guide the Federation's resource allocation decisions, with the aim of improving the lives of working people. Using a variety of data sources, we conduct polling and build statistical models to identify important voters, and determine the best way to engage with them. We also work together with AFL-CIO staff and allies to conduct field experiments - real world campaign scenarios used to evaluate our program and identify the most effective campaign tactics. This position provides an opportunity to work closely with people who have years of experience conducting political analysis and a dedication to using statistical methods to advance workers' rights.

The Junior Analyst assembles and analyzes voter file, membership, polling and other data to build products that improve the efficiency of the AFL-CIO's programs, such as statistical models of supportive voters or relevant targeting information.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

• Collecting, standardizing and preparing data sets for use in modeling and analytics.
• Analyzing data sets including voter file, membership and survey data.
• Acquiring and handling large data sets from various sources.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA or BS in related field or equivalent work experience.
• At least 1-2 years relevant work experience and demonstrated success in relevant areas.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated analytical creativity, problem-solving abilities and experience with communication via data analysis.
• Demonstrated interest in progressive causes – including experience with political campaigning, labor, government or public interest groups.
• Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and within a team.
• Familiarity with the principles of political targeting and/or political campaigns.
• Experience with at least one of the following analytical practices:
        o Predictive modeling
        o Survey methodology
        o Randomized controlled trials/experimental design
        o Data visualization
• Experience with at least one of the following software areas:
        o Relational databases and SQL (like PostgreSQL or Vertica)
        o Statistical packages (like Stata or R)
        o Mapping (like ArcGIS or QGIS)
        o Programming or scripting languages (like bash or python)
• Ability to work long and extended hours and weekends.
• Familiarity with the labor movement and its structure is valuable.
