Field Communications Coordinator - South Region

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The AFL-CIO Field Communications Coordinator works within targeted states or other specified grouping to execute external and internal communications plans as a part of political and issues campaigns and lead communications work among the labor movement in that region. The field communications program has a multi-part purpose:
(1) to advance the goals of political and issues field campaigns through internal and external communications;
(2) to help the AFL-CIO shape the public's opinion of unions and make workers' voices heard through on-the-ground press activities
(3) to develop people with the skills needed to fill the labor movement's growing need for effective communicators..
The Field Communications Coordinators work under the direction of the Communications Director in coordination with the National Media Director in the Public Affairs Department.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
• Develop communications campaign strategies in collaboration with State Federation and Central Labor Council leaders and staff;
• Craft messages for state political and issues campaigns;
• Assist in developing and executing communications trainings for union leaders, staff, and members;
• Monitor press coverage of labor and workers' issues throughout the region and identify opportunities to cultivate earned media opportunities and garner media coverage for AFL-CIO political and issues campaigns;
• Meet regularly with communications staff throughout the region to assist with strategic campaign communications planning and conducting external and internal communications;
• Pitch reporters on workers' issues and AFL-CIO initiatives;
• Manage sensitive relationships and serve as primary AFL-CIO field communications representative for labor leaders, allies, staff and members;
• Stage press conferences and events;
• Develop, write, edit and distribute internal and external campaign communications materials, such as sample letters to editors, OpEds and other materials as necessary and working with member activists to place LTEs, etc.;
• Utilize broad communications platforms: blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Salsa, and other online, social media, broadcast and print communications;
• Produce regular reports on activity and background materials for internal and external use.
LIAISON:
 Serve as the primary/initial communications contact for State Federations and Central Labor Councils.
 Work with communications staff, field staff, headquarters staff and state union leaders to integrate internal and external communications into political and issues ground campaign plans.
 Work with other headquarters staff as appropriate to integrate field communications with overall earned media and message plans and strategies on a daily basis.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BA or BS in relevant field is required;
• At least three years of relevant work experience and demonstrated success in relevant areas especially political or issue campaigns;
• Knowledge of the labor movement;
• Experience working in fast-pace environments and in field-based jobs;
• Experience conducting media relations;
• Excellent computer skills including Internet-based research, work processing and desktop publishing software;
• Demonstrated experience with online and social media tools;
• Demonstrated ability to use email marketing tools such as Salsa;
• Excellent writing skills;
• Commitment to labor issues;
• Well-organized, thorough and attentive to details;
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and work under tight deadlines;
• Ability to work independently within the context of a plan;
• Comfortable speaking before a group;
• Strong interest and commitment in addressing issues affecting working people;
• Previous experience with unions, student labor coalitions, community organizations and other labor related organizations is preferred;
• Ability to work long and extended hours including weekends;
• Ability to travel frequently.
