Field Communications Associate

The AFL-CIO Field Communications Associate works in Washington, D.C. and travels throughout the country as necessary to execute internal and external communications plans as a part of political and issues campaigns. The field communications program has a multi-part purpose:
(1) to advance the goals of political and issues field campaigns through internal and external communications;
(2) to help the AFL-CIO shape the public's opinion of today's unions and make workers' voices heard through on-the-ground activities
(3) to develop people with the skills needed to fill the labor movement's growing need for effective communicators and activists.

The Field Communications Associate works under the direction of the Media Outreach Deputy Director in the Public Affairs Department in conjunction with an advisory role with the Campaigns Department. The Field Communications Associate assists the Deputy Media Outreach Director in coordinating the Field Communications.

• Monitors national, state-based and local press coverage of labor and workers' issues and identifies opportunities to cultivate earned media opportunities and garner media coverage for AFL-CIO political, issues, and organizing campaigns;
• Assists state-based communications staff, field staff and union leaders in the development of communications campaign strategies and materials for both internal and external audiences;
• Pitches reporters and bloggers on state-based workers' issues and AFL-CIO initiatives;
• Develops new media contacts and builds press lists;
• Crafts messages and talking points based on national messages for use by state-based communications staff;
• Develops and drafts related template materials supporting national messages, such as sample letters to editors, sample media events kits, sample OpEds;
• Assists state-based communicators with staging press conferences and events;
• Utilizes broad communications platforms: blogs, YouTube, other online, social media, broadcast and print communications;
• Assists in development of training materials for state and local communications staff;
• Assists in developing and maintaining a database of worker spokespeople as well as prepping worker spokespeople.
 Work with communications and field staff, headquarters staff and state union leaders to integrate internal and external communications into political and issues ground campaign plans.
 Serve as a point of contact for state union leaders on communications-related questions.

• BA or BS in relevant field is preferred;
• At least two years of relevant work experience and demonstrated success in relevant areas;
• Knowledge of the labor movement, including experience in the field;
• Experience conducting media relations;
• Excellent computer skills including Internet-based research, word processing and desktop publishing software;
• Experience with online and social media tools;
• Strong writing skills;
• Strong and effective communication skills;
• Strong interest and commitment in addressing issues affecting working people;
• Previous experience with unions, student labor coalitions, community organizations and other labor related organizations is preferred;
• Ability to work long and extended hours including weekends.
