Director of Speechwriting and Publications

The Communications Department carries the voice of America's working families to the media, to leaders and to the general public through earned and social media, online platforms and other communications vehicles.

Responsibilities:
• Oversee all aspects of speechwriting for principals and materials writing, editing and production.
• Supervise staff speechwriter/s and a production manager as well as outside consultants.
• Develop and maintain the speech calendar and assign speeches and deadlines to speechwriter/s.
• Edit all speeches and work through revisions with speechwriter/s.
• Assign op-eds, columns and other projects to speechwriter/s or freelance writers; edit and work with writers on revisions.
• Write speeches, columns, op-eds and other projects as necessary.
• Conduct high-level edit for message and direction on all materials and arrange proofreading.
• Oversee materials production.
• Manage additional special projects as needed.
• Generate and brainstorm ideas for speeches and materials, including venues and formats.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:
• Bachelor's degree or higher in related field.
• Minimum of five to six years performing pro-active media outreach and communications.
• Experience with advocacy organizations a plus.
• Demonstrated and extensive supervisory, editing, writing and project management experience.
• Extremely high standards for quality of writing, editing and materials design and production.
• Ability to maintain crowded project schedules and keep multiple high-priority projects moving and on deadline simultaneously.
• Flexibility'ability to jump on new priorities and opportunities instantly.
• Interpersonal skills and ability to work closely with others at every level of the organization and in other organizations to maximize effectiveness and quality of speeches and materials.
• Understanding of the role of the union movement in America's history and in workers' lives and the economy today. Experience working with unions a significant plus.
• Solid familiarity with elements of a progressive public policy agenda.
• Excellent leadership skills including experience managing or leading a staff team.
• Superior writing skills including experience writing speeches, Op-Eds, press releases, fact sheets and other media related materials.
• Experience in conceptualizing and developing work plans with measurable goals.
• Excellent verbal communications skills.
• Strong commitment to social justice.
• Ability to work long and extended hours including on weekends.
