Development Manager

The AFL-CIO Digital Strategies department uses technology to help build the labor movement and fight for working families. We're looking for someone to join us to lead our small but mighty development team in the fight for economic and social justice.

This is a leadership position that will involve managing, mentoring and training the Digital Strategies development team, overseeing both internal and external development projects, and leading and managing complex projects with diverse groups of stakeholders. You'll need a strong background managing staff, as well as the ability to balance resources and negotiate priorities in an often fast-paced environment. You'll need a commitment to excellence in your work, including utilizing modern best practices to build and maintain a wide variety of tools and properties.
Responsibilities
Day to day, you'll be working closely with departments across the AFL-CIO, from our policy team to organizers in the field, not to mention our 56 affiliated unions, state federations, and local labor councils across the country. Your mission: Identify their goals; help craft the plan (or, at least, the technical parts) to achieve them, including project plans, timelines, and development schedules; then work with the development team to make it a reality. If you enjoy project management and are familiar with systems like MOCHA and SMART goals, you'll fit right in.
Sometimes we partner with external development firms to get all the work done, and you'll have a big role in these partnerships, from choosing the right firm for the work at hand to providing guidance and oversight for specific projects.
Occasionally, you'll step out of your normal day-to-day to help work on other things, whether big all-hands-on-deck projects or just helping on a small task – in short, other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• Demonstrated experience successfully managing a staff team.
• Demonstrated ability to make quick decisions that take into account different organizational needs and requirements.
• Up-to-date knowledge and experience with modern development practices.
• Demonstrated ability to serves as department lead for specific program initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability to train and lead staff at varying levels.
• Ability to adapt communication to have productive conversations with both technical and non-technical parties.
• Recent development experience with HTML5, CSS3, PHP, Ruby on Rails (experience with Node.JS is beneficial).
• Background in MySQL database development and administration.
• Strong understanding of managing LAMP environments.
• Demonstrated experience leading a multi-developer project from conception to completion.
• Understanding of the effective use of project management, including ticketing systems.
• The thirst to learn new technical, managerial, and organizing skills.
• Excellent time-management and organizational skills, and must be able to multitask and prioritize.
• Strong knowledge of the labor movement and passion for working family issues and progressive politics preferred.
• Ability to effectively maintain relationships with AFL-CIO and affiliate staff.
• Ability to work long and extended hours.
