Deputy Director, Governance, Organizational and Leadership Development Division

The Deputy reports to the Governance Organizational and Leadership Development (GOLD) Division Director and assists in managing the Division's functions and supervising the staff. The Deputy is the primary direct supervisor of several of the GOLD staff and involved in the overall planning, management and execution of the GOLD Division's work in collaboration with the Director and the GOLD Division Deputy/Assistant to the President for Worker Centers and Community Engagement. The GOLD Team includes staff in the AFL-CIO's Washington DC headquarters as well as several staff working in the field.

The GOLD Team is responsible for a diverse set of AFL-CIO priorities with the common emphasis on helping the labor movement make the changes necessary to be a powerful force for all working people. The GOLD Team works with other divisions to strengthen our labor councils and State Federations structures and program, and to build effective, strategic community partnerships. Responsibilities include a wide array of educational and leadership development work including Common Sense Economics, Leadership Institutes for labor councils, State Feds, and affiliates, and the Bonnie Laden Union Skills program. The GOLD Team coordinates relationships with over a dozen university-based labor education programs. The GOLD Team manages the Young Worker program, over 40 YW Chapters and its national Young Worker Advisory Council (YWAC). Governance responsibilities involve coordinating all governance issues for the AFL-CIO's 400 plus labor councils and State Federations, including constitutional and financial accountability, as well as guiding the governance of the AFL-CIO young worker groups and the YWAC. (The Deputy/Assistant to the President for Worker Centers and Community Engagement has primary responsibility for strengthening the labor movement's work with Worker Centers, the Federation's community engagement efforts and the Adelante: We Rise Campaign.)

Specific oversight of the above range of functions is shared across the three GOLD management positions, with each person having primary responsibility for particular areas of work and related staff and budgets with the Director providing overall oversight and management.

Responsibilities:

• Planning, developing and ensuring execution of the priorities in the specific areas of work under the supervisor's responsibility.
• Coordinating and supervising the staff responsible for the work in those areas. Developing the abilities of those staff to grow in their own areas of responsibility.
• Working within the Campaigns Department and with other AFL-CIO Departments to maximize coordination of work.
• Working directly with State and local AFLCIO leaders and staff and affiliate leaders and staff to advance the mission of the AFLCIO and the specific work of Governance, Organizational and Leadership Development.
• Working with community partners and university-based educators to advance the mission of the AFLCIO and the GOLD Team.

Qualifications:

• 6-8 years of relevant experience showing increased levels of responsibility.
• Proven ability to combine clear purpose and vision with effective, collaborative execution of a wide range of challenging work.
• Proven ability to supervise and develop staff, maximizing each person's contribution and inclusion in the overall meaning and strategic purpose of their work.
• Proven ability to take initiative, and respond creatively and adaptively to challenges.
• Proven ability to work effectively as part of a small management team, within a large organization.
• Enthusiasm for working within and building a highly diverse, creative and mission-driven team.
• Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated experience managing staff and diverse teams.
• Demonstrated ability to build and motivate teams and work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and support role.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing personal work plans and goals.
