Corporate Research Analyst

JOB TITLE: Corporate Research Analyst
DEPARTMENT: Office of Investment
REPORTS TO: Director, Office of Investment

Overview of Responsibilities:
The AFL-CIO Office of Investment seeks to promote the interests of worker-beneficiaries in the capital markets by leading shareholder initiatives, advocating for effective legislative and regulatory reform, and supporting active ownership and corporate governance reform strategies of worker pension and benefit funds. The Office of Investment works closely with affiliates and their affiliated benefit fund trustees.
The Corporate Research Analyst works directly with Office of Investment staff, AFL-CIO affiliates and other AFL-CIO departments to develop and coordinate the AFL-CIO Capital Stewardship Program and its related projects, provide advanced technical research services, develop company-specific and regulatory initiatives, and assist in the strategy development and implementation of the program.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conduct quantitative and qualitative research, including financial analysis, industry, corporate and issue research.
• Prepare corporate profiles and identify issues for reform initiatives.
• Track, research and monitor corporate compliance to legislative and regulatory initiatives and standards.
• Plan, research, write and edit quality research products including reports, presentations, issue briefs, fact sheets, talking points, letters, speeches, websites, articles and other educational and advocacy materials.
• Implement shareholder initiatives, including drafting of shareholder proposals and campaign materials, negotiating with company representatives, working with various investment professionals and coordinating with other institutional investors.
• Help to coordinate public and Taft-Hartley fund best practices around asset selection, service provider accountability and related issues.
• Convene and manage workgroups and task forces comprised of institutional investors, affiliate senior staff and trustees and other involved parties.
• Represent the AFL-CIO Capital Stewardship Program in a variety of public forums, including shareholder meetings, conference calls and conferences.
• The Corporate Research Analyst is responsible for implementing department programs, campaigns and initiatives.
Requirements and Qualifications:
• An advanced degree in finance, law, economics or business, or a bachelor's degree and equivalent relevant experience.
• A minimum of three years of experience in advanced corporate research or advanced financial analysis experience.
• Experience in evaluating and developing financial research, corporate governance policies, and regulatory proposals.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear and timely analysis of current issues.
• Strong inter-personal skills, including experience in convening and managing constituency groups and others involved in policy development, developing/managing education efforts and legislative activities.
• Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing personal work plans and goals.
• Proficiency in Internet-based research, word processing, spreadsheet programs and database design and management.
• Proficiency in utilizing statistical information for policy analysis and advocacy.
• Flexibility to travel in performance of duties.
• Ability to work extended or irregular hours as needed.
