General Counsels Office

This position provides all administrative support to the AFL-CIO General Counsels, serves as office manager and works within a team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Administrative liaison for General Counsels and staff with affiliates, union lawyers and all three branches of the U.S. Government;
• Provide all administrative support for both General Counsels;
• Screen, manage and prioritize visitors, calls and mail;
• Schedule and coordinate all activities, travel and speaking engagements for both General Counsels;
• Coordinate and assist in all aspects of major offsite meetings and conferences, including review of hotel contracts;
• Draft and edit a variety of correspondence and legal documents;
• Prepare and process legal papers and documents requiring knowledge of legal format, terminology;
• Receive and prepare check requests for the General Counsels approval;
• Track and record all legal invoices annually;
• Screen, manage and prioritize visitors, calls and mail;
• Conform, index and file legal documents;
• Maintain file of audit letters for AFL-CIO Departments and Allied Groups
• Maintain chart of AFL-CIO managers' service on outside Boards, pursuant to the Ethical Practices Committee;
• Track and review department cell phones, conference calls and webinar invoices:
• Set up and maintain blog review schedule;
• Independently respond to correspondence and prepare reports/memos;
• Gather, organize, and prepare information for routine reports (ie. lobbying, LM-2 and LM-30);
• Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date confidential files and records while using discretion regarding privileged and confidential matters;
• Track, input and maintain leave and attendance records;
• Provide equipment and new employee orientation for new staff members.


• Demonstrated ability to exercise good political judgment;
• Professional, courteous and tactful;
• Demonstrated proficiency in proofreading, report editing and compilation;
• Positive attitude and excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
• Knowledge of technical legal terms and various legal forms and documents;
• Knowledge of legal procedures and practices involved in composing, processing and filing a variety of legal documents;
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply organizational policies and procedures;
• Knowledge of standard legal references and their contents;
• Ability to perform complex legal clerical work involving independent judgment;
• Ability to manage work flow, to lead staff and to work well within a team;
• Experience coordinating and managing schedules;
• Experience working in a high-pressure environment and meeting unpredictable deadlines;
• Experience managing and prioritizing multiple tasks;
• Excellent problem solving skills and experience identifying problems and finding potential solutions;
• Highly motivated and a self-starter.
• Demonstrated proficient knowledge of Windows XP, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Access and Outlook;
• Ability to work overtime;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Tests Include:
Clerical, Typing, Database (access), Spreadsheet (excel), Legal Proofreading and Legal Terminology
HOURS: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
