Overview of Responsibilities

National labor federation seeks a highly motivated Assistant Director skilled at all facets of the job. Must be comfortable operating in a high-pressure, high-velocity environment. This is a full-time position that offers competitive salary and benefits.

The Assistant Director will work closely with the Political Director to execute all strategic functions and strengthen internal and external commitment to the AFL-CIO political program.

This position reports to the Director of the Political Department.

Description of Duties

• Part of the senior leadership team of the Political department of the AFL-CIO. Assist in overseeing the implementation of the political program.
• Integrate political and issue campaigns into the larger political strategy of the AFL-CIO.
• Work with Affiliates, progressive community and the State Federation and local body's to foster communication.
• Directly manage the AFL-CIO's Path-2-Power candidate recruitment program and its staff.
• Communicate the AFL-CIO's mission and what the political program does.
• Represent the AFL-CIO at various meetings both inside the Labor movement and in the Progressive community as a whole.
• Directly liaise with Political Director in the planning and implementation of monthly Political Director's meetings.
• Assist AFL-CIO Officers and other AFL-CIO leadership as needed on special projects.
• Foster interdepartmental collaboration across all aspects of the Political program.


• A minimum of 7 years' experience in national and local political program development and implementation, with significant experience managing field mobilization programs.
• Minimum of 5 years of senior level experience working with the labor movement.
• Minimum of 3 years of knowledge of, and experience working directly with organizational principles, Party committee structures, candidates and elected officials.
• Extensive management experience, directly managing/overseeing staff and an ability to lead a team.
• Action-oriented, highly motivated self-starter, adaptable, and innovative approach to strategic planning and program development.
• Ability to handle multiple high priority projects with competing deadlines.
• Proven ability to build and leverage relationships with diverse audiences and partners.
• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communications skills; demonstrated ability to communicate with a wide and diverse set of audience.
• Ability to travel extensively and work long hours and weekends as required.
• Excellent political judgment.
• Strong commitment to the labor movement and social justice.
